Teske’s Germania in San Jose, CA

June 2007

Way Good.  We love Teske’s, and not just because they serve the closest thing to authentic German food that we’ve been able to find in the Bay Area.  Laura and I have an annual Oktoberfest party that is catered by Teske’s and they do a fabulous job.  Cindy, who owns the restaurant along with her brothers, and Miriam, her assistant extraordinaire, have put together several major Oktoberfest feasts for seventy five people in our backyard, and the result has been some really phenomenal beer drinking, food scarfing events!  More recently, we held our fourteen year old’s 8th grade graduation dinner in the garden area of the restaurant downtown, and with a group of thirty, had another great experience.  The menu includes all of the traditionals, many of which we’ve tried, and all of which we’ve loved.  I have to admit though, that the smoked pork chop is just an amazing piece of pig that you shouldn’t deny yourself!  Servings are huge and there is NO chance you will leave hungry.  Teske’s is not all about catering and parties.  We’ve been there for regular old dinner with the same great experience.  The restaurant is like four restaurants in one – there’s a down-to-earth, drink-some-beer bar at the entrance.  Past the bar is a typical german “pub” seating area, and past that is a larger room that is somewhat more formal (except for the big old, elk/moose/whatever-it-is head in the corner) and could accommodate a pretty large crowd.  Finally, you come to the outdoor garden, where on a hot summer day, only a liter of beer is between you and truly being transported to a bier garten in München!
