Green Papaya – UPDATE, Los Gatos
Green Papaya – UPDATE, Los Gatos
April 2008
Hmmmm. This restaurant is on its way down. We’ve been here several times before, but the pricing is beginning to get out of control and the service is way slow. At a recent lunch, two of us paid $55 for two dishes, steamed rice, an ice tea and a diet coke! Come on … the food here is ok, but not worth $55. And I shouldn’t have to wait the better part of an hour for it. This lunch was way below standard.
Slanted Door, San Francisco
Slanted Door, San Francisco

Way Good. The Slanted Door is a Vietnamese restaurant that presents traditional dishes crafted to reflect the French influence on Vietnam and its cuisine. The restaurant is located off the Embarcadero, which follows the tip of the peninsula around to the old ferry docks just blocks from the financial district. The Slanted Door is located at the dock where the trans-bay ferry (between San Francisco and Oakland) makes it stop. I’d bet the constant supply of hungry travelers brought right to the restaurant’s front door is partly responsible for the restaurant’s popularity. We tried the shaking beef, crab cellophane and a handful of veggie dishes. What I remember most fondly, though are the fresh oysters! We ordered a selection of small, delicate oysters on the half-shell and they simply melted in our mouth. Really, really good. On the down side, reservations are hard to get, the place is a mob-scene and while the food is quite nice, the ambiance is simply not in line with the food or the price. We liked The Slanted Door, and its location makes for an interesting change of scenery compared to where we usually eat, but overall, not quite up to the hype.

Green Papaya in Los Gatos, CA
May 2007
S’Ok. The Green Papaya is a Vietnamese restaurant that brings some of that country’s French influence to the dishes they serve. We’ve tried about 25% of the menu, always with great results. Maybe a bit too much oil here and bit too much sauce there, and we haven’t tried Green Papaya for dinner, but overall it makes for a great lunch experience.
